My key fobs are both working intermittently. I've seen all of the repair threads. My question is, how do you disarm the alarm/start the car, when you have to unlock the door with the key?

unlock your door and hurry up and start your car with your key, the alarm will shut off then.

If you lock the door with the key you will not set the alarm in the first place and then it will not go off when you use the key to get back in.

Actually, just turning the ignition on will do it. As odd as the may sound, that's the only way you can do it without the remote.

But doesn't that leave the vehicle 'unprotected'?........

Yes it does and is a trade off one would have to consider. The op would need to look at when the last time they heard of or were the victim of a break in. Also would be theives would not even know we had factory alarms unless they new our cars to be deturd from trying to break in. It is not like the yellow security light is highly visible from the outside ya know.

I plan to. It is still good to know what to do in the event your fob stops working. It seems like a design flaw, in that unlocking the door with the key does not disarm the car, especially since this feature exists in much older cars. My last car was a 98, and unlocking the car with the key was equivalent to pushing the button.

My 2005 GTO can also be disarmed with the key in the event that the fob stops working.

Mike gave a solution in post #2 of this thread https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/problems-service-repairs-42/security-horn-disable-40798/ Someone said it only works less than half the time. I have not tried it and wonder if anyone else has?
