Knocking, clicking under engine

I have a 2007 HHR 2.4L engine and all of a sudden underneath the engine I started hearing a ticking or knocking sound it sounds as if it is on the left side. I came home and have not driven it since my brother who has worked on cars for over 30 years remove the head gasket but nothing was loose what would be the next step to finding out where the ticking/knocking coming from?

I really doubt that he removed the head gasket....you must be using the wrong term in describing what he removed.

I would say to just let your brother try an figure it out since he has the car right there and can do some "hands on" diagnostics.
Trying to get a guess from us internet folks would be just that, a guess, since we don't have the car right here to look like your brother does.

No offense, but I also get the feeling from your post description that you're not that mechanically inclined with cars.
If he removed the head gasket that is a major job which is the removal of the top of the engine or cylinder head.
I'll guess here and bet maybe he just removed the valve cover to take a look.

Anyhow. Without a little better detail and info, it would be futile for us to even venture a guess.

Let us know if your brother comes up with anything. And, if he needs some advise, he could talk with us on this forum. Just let him use your username and this thread so we know who it is.

Moved to a more appropriate forum section. Not exactly a "2.4L Performance" topic.

By left side, do you mean the driver side? By underneath the engine, do you mean the bottom of the engine or underneath the hood?

some thoughts for him to look for, air cleaner box bracket, flex pipe, (this would be accompanied with a loud exhaust noise), timing chain tensioner, let us know what he finds!!!!

I wonder if the noise might be on the passengers side of the engine. When the serpentine belt went bad on mine it made a ticking noise when the engine was running. With the engine shut off I could not see the strip of belt that had torn lose from the rest of the belt.

With the engine running I could not see it because it was to fast. finally when I shut the engine off one time the loose bit was on top and easy to see.

The new belt was cheap and I had just bought the dandy {but mostly useless} serpentine belt tensioner adjusting tool from Harbor Freight. I ended up using a little ton and a half hydraulic bottle jack and a short length of 2x4 to move the belt tensioner.

If the OP ever comes back, maybe we will find out exactly what they mean.

She has been back according to her stats. Just didn't bother to rejoin her own thread.
