Latest oil change - shavings on the oil plug

Last October when I changed the oil I installed a magnetic oil plug.

Look what it collected over the last 10,959 kms (6,809 mi):

Is that normal?

Here's the twisted filter:

2.4L VVT Ecotec in a 2006 HHR LT, 37,326 km (23,193 mi) total mileage on it.

Yes. For that many miles between changes.

There's not even 29K miles on the car yet.

The oil and filter are changed each time. Same mileage on oil and filter.

BTW, the oil used was Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 synthetic.

My mistake, I misread your post. But the shavings/debris are pretty normal looking.

That mileage was from going by the OLM.

Got in the car this morning to take the wife to work and got the "CHANGE OIL SOON" message.

I had already planned on changing it today anyway; I change the oil and filter every 6 months (April & October)

Sometimes its funny....I'll have twisted oil filters and other times not...I've used Fram, Supertech, Purolater and OEM. The Purolater looked like and accordion when I took it out and a couple of the OEM's have have the twist also...

My last change with PP I discovered metal shavings in it as well...never noticed shavings with the other changes but maybe because the filter was not so twisted that I didn't look as hard

Are you going to send it off to Blackstone for a UOA? I recently posted one over on BITOG and the results were really good for about 7300 miles...I think I had that in since January...OLM was at 41% I think...iron was a bit high but rest of wear metals were low and TBN read at 3.5 so I probably could have gone a bit farther with that oil than I did.

About to go over 30K since May 07

Yes, I took a sample to send off to Blackstone. Will be sending it out next week.

The one I sent in last fall was for just over 8000 miles on Castrol Syntec and it came out great.

No idea about shavings in past oil changes, as this is the first one with a magnetic oil plug and the first 3 oil changes were done at the dealership and the one I did in the fall was with the stock oil plug.

This was my first run on PP. PP is in again, since I still have enough oil for four more changes.

If the cap and filter are not alined when screwing down the oil filter cover it will give the filter a little twist.
