low/no speed steering noises

06 2.4
when parked/low speeds, I get a groaning clunk from the front end when turning, or even just taking off straight. Just trying to narrow things down some. I am sure the sway links and bushings need replacement. Lca should be fine, replaced those last year I think it was. But I am also wondering if it might be the intermediate shaft, which looks barrels of fun to replace. I haven't unplugged the assist motor, and I have had issues with that. While teaching 1 of my kids to parallel park, it would stop working till I shut the car off and started it back up. But, I don't think it is the motor.
So, my guesses are the bushings making noise, or the intermediate.
I should point out, this noise is only at low/no speeds. No noise on highways over even street speeds; and it doesn't always happen. Though it might be becoming more common. I should add that it's a little over 200,000 miles, but I've noticed that mileage has little to do with when problems happen on this car.

If you turn the wheel without forward or backward motion the motor can overheat and shut down.

Doesn't have anything to do with the noise, but you mentioned turning the wheel while not moving and the assist motor problems.

That's about what I figured with the motor. Pretty dumb, really, but then a lot was designed dumb on these cars.

Do you know that the steering motor is a free replacement extended warranty?

RJ, already looking at that. That's why I think it might be intermediate shaft. I just loathe throwing money at problems till they go away. Plus since the car isn't worth a much, I'm not going to put much into it. So, I'm trying to pinpoint things a bit.

donbrew, Still replacement after 14 years?

Lifetime! In the case of 2006 I think it is a full recall. https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/gm-r...-status-50716/

Well, I didn't have the car new, but it was only a year old, and that motor hasn't been replaced. Hmm, I might have to check on that.

So, does the intermediate shaft sound like the culprit?
