my baby is sick a/c stopped, CEL

two days ago, my a/c shut off, the temp gauge stopped working and the dreaded engine light comes on. I put a new a/c fuse in, but it only woked temporaily. by the afternoon the a/c shut off again and the temp gauge stoped working again. Does any one have an idea what the problem is?

Bad thermostat.

Posting the year, model, engine size and mileage would also be helpful.
And. If you have a CEL on, get the codes read. That will point you in the direction of the cause.
Post up your code numbers. (ex: P0000) not the description of the code.

I'll take a code guess.
P0128 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature
This is usually caused by a bad thermostat.
That code will also disable the AC function.

I concur with George, and don't go cheap with an aftermarket T-stat, get a GM AC Delco!

Without getting the code downloaded, you are shooting in the dark. Most auto parts stores will download the codes for free.

Get that done, and post the results (the actual code, not the verbal description that the parts guy may tell you).

And yeah, best GUESS at this point is the thermostat. If the code turns out to be the P0128, grab a new thermostat, and see the how-to section for an article on replacing it.

Not in California or Hawaii. Do you know anyone with a code reader? I have one but I'm probably too far away (~60 miles east)

It's a 2006 2.4L LT, 123,305 miles. I have to purchase a code scaner, or find someone to borrow one from. I'll try and see if that is the challenge. I'll keep you posted.

Try Harbour Freight or EBay.

You can get an ELM 327 module for less than $20 on eBay, it will interface with a cellphone with the right app.

A T-stat should cost less than $30 takes about 30 minutes to install (2 bolts and some awkward leaning over).

Smile Thanks for the help

Back in July, I posted challenges with my 06 LT a/c turning off, then back on- with new fuse- then off again. Thanks to Firemangeorge, Old blue, and Whopper, the problem turned out to be just what they predicted, without going to a scanner. I changed the thermostat and the problem hasn't occurred since.
Thanks Guys!!https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/imag...icon_thumb.gif
