Need help with power steering problem HHR location: Netherlands
Good day everybody, i hope you all doing well♧ I am from the Netherlands as you maybe know GM left us some time ago in 2015 it was i think, so any service is not easy its a real shame.
I have a HHR from 2008 with only 90.000km on it. Recently it got big maintenance and much replaced from full new brakes, disks, tyres, exhause cat, etc, wasnt cheap much parts now difficult to get for a HHR sadly.
So it drove very smooth for a week and suddenly got what i read here the known message on my display "POWER STEERING OFF"
When you start the car the power steering will work always and most times for a few minutes before shutting off. Restarting the car gets you another so many minutes before the power steering goes out again. But the amount of time it works before shutting off is not consistent.
I know from reading many threads here most likely its the fuses or bad ground or the ps assist motor/ steering colum, so replaced the yellow fuse to be sure because i did jumpstart friends cars a few times in the winter months ago and checked and cleaned the grounds a bit to be safe and now its really even worse it cuts out even faster as before it seems lol. But it does looks it steers a bit easier as before even when i get the power steering off message, but maybe i just got stronger..
So what i read it will be difficult to get any recall support from GM here if somebody knows a way let me know please. But otherwise what i read i can best try to order the part "GM General Motors Electric Power Steering Motor hhr part nr: 19257875" from Ebay am i correct?
I did check on a GM site if that part nr: 19257875 was correct for my Vin but got a message "it could not be verified"
My VIN= 3GNDA33P88S563267 is there somebody who can verify its certainly the correct part please or maybe thinks its not that motor but something else?
Any help is much appreciated thanks in advance! Best wishes Ralf
Hi, welcome to the site, first check the fuse box under the hood , tighten those 7 mm bolts all 4 of them, good and tight , past any clicking. Now push all the fuses and relays firmly into place especially fuse #1 , tighten that red wire terminal on the upper left side of the fuse box it should only have 1 wire that’s to the electric power steering motor.

Reason: Typo
Either 19257876 or 19257875 will work. The procedure is very easy, just disconnect then replace, just a couple of bolts and a electrical connector.
Check the power steering fuse especially if this happened just after a jump start.
Unfortunately the reimbursement program ended in 2016 or 10 years from first registration, depending on which document you look at.
There is a link to check recall status in my sig; I used it to find out that you have no outstanding recalls. There is also a link to FREE Service Manuals.
Why did you replace the cat? Is that a country requirement?
Thanks guys for the warm welcome and the help its much appreciated!
Answers:
@RJ_RS_SS_350 :-> That is good to know that part should work thanks for the info!
@Oldblue :-> Those 4 bolts 7mm i not tried yet thanks very much for that tip its worth a try indeed.
The red wire has been checked and made clean to bare steel so should be good the yellow fuse has been replaced yes but did not help.
Im not sure yet how i best check the power supply to the motor but its worth looking into yes thanks.
@Donbrew :-> yes i tried to look if GM could help out but no response yet♧ i could not find any active recalls for my hhr either so think it will be up to myselve to try to fix this issue but thanks for the info its much appreciated!
The cat/ exhaust was rusted completely because of all the salt on the roads most likely in the winters here so could not be saved sadly.
Thanks for the help so far my friends its very much appreciated! I Wish you all a great day take care!
The electric power steering motor replacement wasn’t a recall , but an extended warranty, as Donbrew said that expired after ten years of service. So your 2008 expired in 2018
Oke i think i bought the car around 2018 almost in new condition but never knew it was a issue on these cars offcourse. Until i was driving and was just making a turn and this happend, luckily i can drive without ps its just annoying in some cases like tight parking here in the city lol
But if the simple fixes will not solve the problem i know now for sure the biggest chance the problem is that "Power Steering Assist Motor 19257876 or 19257875 "
So thanks again guys let me know if i can maybe help out with something, any questions about wooden shoes, tulips, etc im your man🍻😄
But seriously i mostly worked in small mechanics and electronics circuitboard level like for big chipmachines ASML, aircrafts to watches and weapons systems, robots, etc. I collect weapons since i was a kid mostly European, American and eastern weapons and trained since kid in different martial arts/ mma so if you got questions in any of the above let me know Have a great day all stay safe!
