Never give up...
When I bought my Panel I was told that the previous owner had given up on the vehicle due to an issue with the stereo (repeated attempts to fix it had failed and GM bought the car back under "lemon" rules). The dealership I purchased it from had replaced the head unit, thinking that was the problem, but there was still a noticeable whine whenever the stereo was on. I took it to my local GM Service center, they replaced the amp first, but that didn't fix it, so they traced the problem to a broken connector in the wiring harness. Now it is repaired, there is no whine through the speakers anymore, and I am a happy camper.
I also got to look at the entire service history of my Panel, and other than regular maintenance, the only things on it were replacement of the steering column (which I understand is something many many HHRs had to have done) and all the attempts at repairing the stereo, which included 5 (that's right, FIVE) new head units. I must admit that I feel bad for the original owner for having to go through all that, but his/her loss is gonna be my gain.

Just goes to show you that another set of eyes looking at the same problem can really help. One wire caused it to be a "lemon"...so, riddle me this...does that make your car a salvage title? Is there a designation on the title about it being bought back under lemon law? Just curious.

Well, according to the dealer it didn't affect the status of the title, and GM did add a new 12mos/12k miles bumper to bumper warranty on it from the day I bought it, which is officially awesome.
