Hi Jackie, to the forums!

Have the ignition related recalls been performed? Link to check your recall status is in my signature.

Auto Parts stores will perform a free battery load test, be prepared to leave the battery with them for charging before they can test it.

If you’re the new owner, safe bet you have an expired or dead battery. Considering your new to the HHR, the battery is in the back down with the spare tire.
remove the negative cable first, wrap it in a dry towel or a nitrile glove , then remove the positive cable and wrap it or put a nitrile glove. You do not want them touching together. The nuts are 10 mm the clamp bolt is either a 13 or 14 mm gently remove the vent tube from the battery then lift the battery out . It’s a series 90 650 CCA battery
