If it's a bcm the replacement will need to be programed after it is installed.

The hi beam head lights are used when the car is locked and unlocked with the key fob. So if they flash that would check the wiring from the bcm to the headlights.

You stated that it works intermittently so I would guess you are close to the problem.

Typically bcm issues are not intermittent but not impossible. The bcm is located with/behind the inside fuse box.

I would turn on the headlights and then wiggle and tap the wiring in and around the inside fuse box. You just might get the lights to flicker and find a poor/ loose connection in that area.

If that don't work then it's time to do voltage checks to find the problem.

As oldblue suggested it wouldn't hurt to try a known good muti switch just to rule it out.

 

Illuminate the positive, eliminate the the obvious and the least expensive!

One thing we haven't suggested is disconnect the battery for 30 minutes to reset the computers

 

That's a good suggestion on the computer reset.

 

As Tom Chapin once sang "Imagine all the possibilities, and make a wish" so I thought we have not taken all the possible steps to resolve the issues!

 

I had the battery disconnected when I installed the other fuse block under the hood so the reset should have taken place.

Tonight after work I will do the jiggle test so I can use the darkness to my advantage to illuminate the problems to eliminate it.

Or at least continue to point us into the right direction.

I jiggled wires... No go, but I tested the fob a few times and the head lights did not come on. Lock or unlock.

I had the key on with the high beams on and then switched to low and then turned the key off and the headlights stayed on as they should.

I pushed on relays and fuses, jiggled wires under the hood, in the car by the bcm and drivers feet, moved the steering wheel up an down a few times.

Guys... Where do we stand? Test the multi switch or rule it a BCM issue?

If BCM issue, is there a software I can download to use my OBD2 scanner with to do tech2 or tech3 controls with?
I have a usb plug to go into my laptop and that is a double ended question as I have a delco radio that needs unlocked in an 02 impala and would like to save my friend a minimum of $100 to bring it to the dealer.
If we both have to bring our cars to the dealership we may as well buy the software right? Or is that beyond the DIY scope?

I'd go that one more step before the BCM , order up the multi switch!

 

Wait; you replaced the entire underhood fuse box!? The chances of operator error just went through the roof.

And NO to your programming questions, however a good shop could probably pull it of with their SnapOn tool.

 

It should be pretty easy to figure this out using a multi-meter.
If the high beam relay is being activated by using the high beam lever, then the BCM is working correctly.
If the relay is working correctly, then the problem lies between the relay and the headlights.

The sequence is: Multi switch--BCM--relay--headlamps.

Start at the headlamps and work backwards using the multi-meter.
