I have a 2006 2.4 l hhr and the check engine light came on. so I tried to connect a obd2 meter to diagnosis it and the meter did not work or even turn on so I got another obd2 meter and the same thing happened so I got the third obd2 meter and the same thing happened again. All three meters were different brands as well. The Car runs ok overall except when idling the engine sounds if it is missing. If anybody else has experinced this problem or found a solution please get back to me. Thanks again fellow HHR drivers.

I think if they are older obd2 scanner they will not work our cars i believe use a CAN protocol communication and the older scanners could not process this info. I had the same problem and when i borrowed a friends scanner that said it did can same brand as the one that did not read just a different model it worked and pulled the codes from the car. Hopefully someone can verify this is the truth But I am ready to go buy a scanner that is can capable

I have not had that problem... We had a bad temp sensor 2 weeks ago with the wifes HHR and took it to the local parts store, they have the ACTRON scanner (same one that i used when i worked there 3 years ago) and it worked fine. You might have a bad connection there... IMHO i would take it to the dealer.

I would check the data link connector. for power and ground, sounds like you may have lost a power feed maybe a fuse. here is the conncetor pin outs You may have to copy this to your doc. then enlarge it to read it. (sorry)

Rugar20 is correct. The older OBD2 scanners will not work - they will not connect/log in at all. The newer scanners with the CAN specification will work. I have already replaced my older scanner with a newer CAN model and it works just fine.

Ahhh you are in Canada. - Check the latest flyer for Canadian Tire as they have 4 OBD2CAN readers in the flyer, ranging in price from $99.99 t0 $249.99. I bought this one a few months ago, and it works just great -

However I got it on a super sale price for around $99 - and sold my old one that was not CAN compliant for $25.
My new one works just great and even has an online report capability where they will record and email you a full report (kinda gimicky but nerdy-cool I suppose).

I bought a Harbor Freight OBD II/CAN Code Reader last year. It has worked great on my 06 HHR and also on several friends' vehicles. They are really inexpensive at HF, I bought mine for $40. Mine came with a book of codes and a CD.

no matter how old your scanner is it should at least power up. (as long as it is obd2)the power,grounds and some of the data wires are pined the same for all cars and all years starting with the year 1996 and up. (gov. standards) this is how some states plug in and check the car for e-check.
