No Water

Just got back from taking my son to school. I noticed that the temp gauge was not working, but I attributed it to some wierd electric stuff-2 days ago, my HVAC panal lights flashed for a few seconds, then have been ok, plus my turn signals stopped shutting off after the turn.

But when I checked the DIC to see if the temp there was working, the motor picture turned on (check engine). I was only a couple of blocks from home, so I kept driving. I checked the water reserve, then the hose cap itself, and both were bone dry. I am waiting for my wife to get me some antifreeze so I can fill it up then see where the leak is. (Dont want to use water in case it is just a hose and the residual will remain in the block)

The funny thing is yesterday, my wife told me it looked like something was leaking from my car. I told her it was just the snow/ice mix melting after our little winter storm. It didnt look like antifreeze, but who knows. Either she was right, or she was psychiclly predicting what was about to happen-creepy

And this has to happen now, right in the middle of my NEwEST super stereo upgrade that will wow everybody here!

Make sure you didn't mix brands of anti-freeze. GM uses Dex-Cool.

The car seems to be holding the water, but the temp gauge is still not working. Is there a fuse for it???

Are both the guage and temperture reading on dic not working? Mine were both not working. They added some fluids and replaced the thermostat and that corrected the situation.. Keep us posted!!!!

Yup-neither one works. Any idea how hard it is to change a thermostat?

I replaced it myself (36 bucks mechanics price). It would have been pretty easy, except one of the 2 bolts was blocked by the stupid hose clamp, so I had to use an open end wrench instead of a socket.

Afterwards, when I started the car, it still had the code and the temp gauge didnt work. I got a little nervous, and called my friends repair shop to see if they could check my codes. They told me to come down, and now when I started the car, the temp gauge worked. The code was PO128 which means coolant/thermostat.

Now, I hope that the reason I lost the fluid was due to it running over and not a leak. I will be monitoring it for a while, and carrying a gallon of antifreeze just to be safe.

For the leak, check the driver side back coolant pipe that is part of the thermostat housing. That's where my '07 was leaking. It was running down back of block, dripping onto transmission casing, migrating along the transmission pan gasket (auto trans) and with the red color of Dexcool it looked like a leaky pan gasket. All it was was a loose factory spring tension clamp on the coolant hose at the pipe. Dealer (warranty) put a screw tightened band clamp on and that corrected it.

Thankss for the tip. I marked my overflow tank and am checking it. I have to wash down my engine tomorrow when it is cool to remove any residual antifreeze that may be burning off.
