Angry Overheating

Thanks for the add!
My problem started the other day when returning from the Chevy dealer. I was driving thru town and noticed that the temp was all of a sudden climbing. It had been running 190-194 (AC on) but now was up to 207 (AC off) and rising. As I continued out of town toward home it got up to 226 but began to fall as I got out of stop and go traffic. On the open road it never got below 214 (AC still off). When I got home and parked in the garage it had shot back up to 224. I jumped out and raised the hood, fan was not running. I turned the AC on and still no fan and by now temp was 232. I returned to the dealer to get a t-stat, installed that, removed the cooling fan and flushed out the radiator and condenser with air the water to make sure it was clean. reassembled, refilled and burped the cooling system and test drove the car. temp again went to 232 by the time I got it back in the garage with the fan still not working. Fuses checked and relay replaced for the fan. Day two - replaced cooling fan assembly and still fan is not working. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi eaglebus, to the forums!!

Please state year/engine/transmission, as well as any recent history, including what the dealer did for you.

First to cure a misconception; the t-stat's job is to keep the temp above 180F. it does not contribute to overheating.

The encouraging thing is the temp is not going above 232F with the fan not working.

The fuse is #40 did you check the relay #50 underhood? Since you replaced the fan and the temp sensor is working that leaves the fuse, the relay and the wiring. It is not very complicaded.

Not likely since he states in his post that the cooling fan is NOT running.

The bearings in the pump are bad there for, push on the gas forces coolent through and it cools it back down, let off the gas in stop traffic it gets hot. Mine is doing the same thing. It’s been doing it for almost a year now. Cooling fans won’t cool your car. The flow of coolent cools your car

But the fan cools the coolant that cools the engine. Yes, if there is no pump there is some heat circulation, like old time steam heat. But nothing to do with the speed of the motor. When the car is moving air flows over the radiator without the fan.
The bearing is a sleeve bearing. More likely the impeller is loose on the shaft.
And his is rises while driving.

The fan is supposed to turn on when the coolant temp reaches 219F and stay on until the coolant temp gets down to 180F when the t-stat closes. It does not care if the coolant is flowing, it only cares what the temp sensor is reading (the digital readout on the dash).
