P Code Confusion
 
I’m not very mechanical and am trying to figure this out. I have a 2008 HHR LT with over 230k miles I’ve been driving since April of 2009. I’ve noticed a noise and vibration of the top plastic cover and my normal mechanic said it’s no big deal and probably a lifter. I didn’t feel real comfortable with that answer. Friend said sounds like a simple misfire. Took it to AutoZone for codes to be read. Codes are P0010 Intake Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit/ Open Bank 1, P0011Intake Camshaft Position Timing- Over-Advances Bank 1, and P0013 Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit/Open Bank 1. The young man at AutoZone said it didn’t make sense that it was both Intake and Exhaust along with the fact that HHR has timing chain and not belt. Said would be unlikely that I need to change timing chain. Anyone have a clue where I need to start keeping in mind I don’t have much mechanical knowledge? I have tried to sort through the forums and search for code issues but didn’t find any with all three codes. Thank you

Those codes are typically for the VVT solenoids. Here's the how-to thread for replacing them.

At 230,000 miles, if the timing and balance shaft chains have never been replaced, it would be a good idea to have a look at the timing chain.

The air cleaner assembly would have to come off. Then remove the valve cover, and the top part of the timing chain will be visible. If there is any slack at all in the chain, it should be replaced.

The p0128 indicates that the thermostat needs replacement. Use only ACDelco 131-158. Other thermostats typically do not open in the time allotted by the ECM.

Thank you so much. I did buy an ACDelco thermostat and will be putting it on today. I will have a look at the timing chain for slack. I really appreciate your help.

You're welcome! Make sure the part number is 131-158.

Take off the valve cover, this is enough slack to justify replacing the timing chain, it is an easy job if you have a few tools and some mechanical skills. Cloyes offer great kits and are available through RockAuto, and they offer us a discount.

We are assuming this is a 2008 2.4L.Could be some fool just disconnected the VVT valves. Those codes indicate either the VVT valves are disconnected in some way or they are both electrically burned out.

Don;'t drive the car if there are red lights on the dashboard.

I don't see a mention of P0014.

Me neither, I posted the photo for reference and which code was present when I inspected the chain.
the P0010 was present also, I replaced both the VVT solenoids.

It is the 2.4L It hasn’t been worked on in a way for someone to have disconnected anything. There is not a code showing for P0014.

all point to possibly damaged wiring or damaged VVT solenoids, replace them with these AC Delco Parts

P0011 shows possibly camshaft timing, this would indicate a loose timing chain or damaged front timing chain guide. I still recommend pulling the valve cover just to be sure. Also change out the VVT solenoids, just so you know we get a discount from RockAuto
