p0016.....car wont start
personally, I would just do an engine swap, plenty of salvage yards with these cars in them with entire engines for $500.0 or less. one near me has an 08 2.2l for $300.0 that has less than 100k on it
Im thinking of buying it and shelving it in case my engine goes bad, or maybe turning it into a project with a supercharger (prefer SC over T)

Broken Heart,Chain,and Tensioner
Just learned my 2.2 Ecotec suffered a bent valve and hit the piston a few times making a hole on top of the piston. My mechanic has been doing motor work for 10 years and said the tensioner broke first, then the chain which caused this damage. He said the 2.2 Ecotec are awesome motors. This motor only had 109000 miles on it and always had my best care with Castrol Full Synthetic every 5000 miles with a can of Seafoam. There was no sludge or varnish build up, it was so clean. My mechanic said this would never had happened if the tensioner was the 3rd design that is offered now.
Now I decide if I rebuild or buy a motor.
I have been a Chevy guy my entire life.
But now Im without this motor because of a faulty tensioner......
Thanks for a Heart Break GM

There are kits with gaskets, chains and guides and valves, to repair your engine.
Just to confirm, was there any rattles or noises prior to the timing chain incident?
Any CEL lights?
Did your mechanic say anything about the front timing chain guide?
I vote, rebuilding the damaged engine or a new one.

Blaming the tensioner is lazy. The tensioner, no matter which design, can only adjust so far. The chain stretching/breaking is the problem. Replacing the tensioner might extend the life of the chain, but it is NOT the fix.
Clicking on cold start that goes away after warm up is a tell-tale warning to park the car and get it fixed.
SeaFoam at every oil change is the cause if your problem. It is a solvent, basically diesel fuel with other stuff added. I would never recommend it at every change, maybe occasionally.

donbrew........I went to my mechanics garage after i received his call. The head was off and I seen the bent valve and the hit's on top of the piston. I had the tensioner in my hand and it was cracked and sheared in 5 pieces. You have no merit with your "Lazy" attack on my mechanic. What kind of technical moderator are you ? Are you a Hot Wheel Tech ? Go get a bag of chips, lay on your couch and study stress cracks......
donbrew.. ....while your at it.........learn about Seafoam.......but that might be a second bag of chips
