P0171. Need help troubleshooting

Hello. I have an 2006 2.4 L LT. 150k miles. I’ve recently been getting P0171 code. I need some advice and someone to interpret my fuel pressure test video.

Symptoms:
  • p0171 code
  • Slow start, about 10 seconds crank
  • Rough start, slowly “chugs” to life once started like an old tractor
  • Loss of power, stills runs and drives
  • Hard/rough Shifting
  • Gas fumes coming out of fresh air vent for a few seconds after starting. Doesn’t happen on recirculating mode
  • Fuel pressure drops right after engine off. No fuel pressure with key on, engine off. See attached video.
  • Intermittent Traction control light

My troubleshooting:
  1. Cleaned MAF
  2. Sprayed throttle body cleaner into throttle body with engine running
  3. EVAP purge valve Blocks air when unplugged
  4. New engine air filter
  5. Seafoamed
  6. Fuel pump fuse good
  7. Fuel pressure test, please lmk what these results mean in attached video (sound on).

Fuel Pressure test video Youtube

EDIT: The pressure test is from the Schrader valve at the front of the engine. I can hear the pump trying to prime with key on and door opening.

Hard to tell what's going on, the mute button at imgur won't unmute.

But check near the driver rear tire well. This is a common area where the fuel line and EVAP line rust in areas that salt the roads. Did this car come from that part of the country?

google drive video

I'm unable to upload the video directly to hhr net. The upload button is dim and does nothing.

I don't think the car has ever been to any of the salt areas. The car is pretty much rust free.

Slow start + P0171 = bad EVAP purge valve or bad fuel pump.
Could be a rusted out Vapor pipe.
Could be any air leak between the MAF and the #! o2 sensor. Spaying stuff around doesn't help much in finding leaks.
The fuel pump only runs for a few seconds unless the engine starts. Fuel pressure should be around 150PSI, then hold for a minute after shut down.
IMG is a really bad place to try to store and post, they change policy too frequently and your images disappear. Try uploading vids to youtube and linking instead.

Your pressure drops immediately. You may have leaky injectors and bad fuel pump.

I’ve replaced everything with the YouTube link now. The fuel pump sits around 40 psi when running. It instantly drops down to 0 when the engine is turned off. I blew into the evap purge valve and it blocks air, meaning it’s still good?

Fuel pressure should not drop to zero that fast.
This leads me to believe the pressure check valve in the fuel pump is not working correctly.
Time to change the pump

Fuel pressure should be 55 to 60 lbs and hold for a minute after key shutoff. , 40 psi running indicates a bad fuel pump.

Solution: replace fuel pump

Thank you for all the advice. I replaced the fuel pump and seal, reusing the wires and securing metal ring. The car starts right up and no longer shift hard. Full power has returned.
