P0455 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected Gross Leak
Checking my EVAP system from front to back for leaks, swapped out the fuel tank cap and the purge valve solenoid with known good ones and got around to hooking up a vacuum gauge on the intake manifold when I realized I didn't know what kind of psi the engine would create to compare it to. Anybody know how much vacuum a 2009 2.4lt should be producing? I have two 2.2lt's I can hook gauge up to but wasn't sure if they would have different spec's. I would think not but at this moment I would like to deal with apples to apples.
Canister Vent valve at the rear will be next DonBrew, however I changed the EVAP Canister Purge valve at the engine first with one I had here that I know is good.
I have some "Ends/Connectors" I cut off an old one. I attached rubber hose on one and connect to to the EVAP Line and Vacuum Gauge, The other connector is plugged with JB Weld and I insert it into the "End/Connector" near the engine so that I can apply pressure and perform a leak down test from below and to the back near the Canister Vent Valve.
If the line is good I shall test the Canister Vent Valve then the Canister, then the fuel fill tube, then the tank and small hoses. Gonna test everything by the time I'm done so that I don't have to crawl under there again for a while hopefully. I've been bit before by finding one leak or faulty component and thinking "A-ha" only to find a second faulty component later. Fortunately I have a complete "Good" system sitting in my "Parts Bin" including the fuel tank that I removed off a "Donor" car. I'll get it done... it's just gonna take some time.
The FTP (fuel tank pressure) has codes if it is an electrical prob. The vent valve has a robber grommet that can be problematical.
CH-48096 is an adapter to the EVAP line, J 41413-200 is a vac/pressure machine. GE-41415-50 is a filler adapter..
You had posted that TSB (or something similar) before. Thus it gave me the idea about the vacuum gauge and some airtight plugs. My scan tool does not have the advanced functions I'm afraid but I do have the vacuum tool and a volt meter. I have to pull the tank to do some other stuff I wish to do as I'm also converting the rear axle to disk brakes and to touch up any rust bla bla bla under the tank.
Keep it coming please because as I mentioned before I would rather check all these little things BEFORE I button it all up and go for a ride!
I have my 07 LT in the shop for a coolant loss issue and was throwing a p0455 code as well. I initially thought that I had a bad head gasket but the symptoms really weren’t matching that and thought the code could be related. In their diagnosis and inspection the discovered that the pcm has update required which indicate diagnostic enhancements for several codes including the p0455. I am hoping that this may cure the problem as it seems this is a very common code HHRs throw. My coolant loss issue turned out to be a leaking trans oil cooler.
"Very common" when the EVAP vent solenoid goes bad, or when people don't heed the directions printed on the fuel filler cap "turn until you hear 2 clicks".
It could possibly be a pin hole or two in the metal line from the rear near the evap canister to the purge valve up front.
mine rotted out inside the insulation, hard to see from underneath the HHR , I cut away the insulation and there it was!
Plus we smelt fuel odour.
