It does however blow the crud off of the shaft. It's not dust that's the problem, but sludge.

Wife picked up the car today, all fixed and very satisfied. The dealer called it "Replaced Shifter Under Special Policy". No mention of any formal recall, but apparently GM has had enough trouble that they decided it was easier to fix free than go through a bunch of hoops. The best part about it was I had no idea this "special policy" existed, it was openly and freely offered, as well as covering the several days of a nice rental ('16 Impala),

It took several days for them to acquire the shift unit from Reno, so car in on Saturday, returned Thursday. Not too bad over all. They mentioned my serpentine belt was starting to crack (unconfirmed by me or wife) so I went ahead and allowed them to replace that in good faith to them and give me peace of mind. That cost me $133.35 with all the disposal fees and tax. Sure, the belt was relatively cheap ($29.33) but I felt since they had the car, might as well go ahead and let them have at least a little bit of my money for the efforts. I couldn't do the work myself anyway, so no need getting down the road later to have a new issue.

Since we bought this vehicle used *unknown how many previous owners*, I was grateful. Perhaps this might be something those who have previously replaced on their own dime could get at least some compensation for?

*edit, this is an '06 HHR LT with roughly 51K miles*

Good news man - glad they made you happy. I'm also glad to see you do the serpentine belt on their recommendation - that makes them happy as well.

Because it is not a recall it is a special extended warranty.

How would this affect others who had to pay to have the shifter replaced over all these year? Could they ask for some type of compensation?

I just contacted my Chevrolet dealer on another issue today but while I had his ear I asked about the Shifter issues.
He said it does not matter how long, or how many miles, It will be covered.
I even re asked the question in a little different way but got the same answer.
Hope he knows what he is talking about.....

Only been here 3 months but so far I love it. Anxiously waiting Spring.

Quite a change in the weather we were used to in Sequim Washington.
15 miles east of Port Angeles.
We were Natives of Seattle so know your area too.
