Okay, that sounds reasonable. I must have missed that it was running good. Carry on wayward son!

I am revisiting this thread because I am not 100 percent certain this job is complete.

I have been plagued with a p0303 code, but sometimes a p0300 general misfire code, and I have done everything under the sun to try and figure it out. Moved coil packs, replaced plugs with genuine plugs, swapped injectors, cleared codes, checked and lubed the connectors with electrical grease, checked the ground on the back of the head, replaced the cam sensor, MAF SENSOR, both cam solenoids are new also. I have cleaned injectors also. The cobalt forums seemed to indicate that a code p0303 on these engines can be a ghost code that shows up sometimes when a general misfire happens, so it may not really be cylinder 3 issue.

The car runs ok but then eventually the check engine light will come on and the T/C light comes on and goes away on its own. It runs like garbage until I clear the codes. It also seems noisy when I am driving it, like an engine roar.

I came across an old post on my google searches where someone had a similar problem and it went away when they found a broken timing chain guide and replaced the chain.

This took me back to my own job. Now I am not certain that my tensioner is actually activated. I followed the instructions and found it difficult to get the tensioned to pop out. I finally assumed it was because no matter how I pushed in on it it would not activate, so I eventually determined that it probably was out and I just didnt see it happen. I know this sounds pretty lame,,,, but it was to the point that I fear if I pushed it on it any more that I would actually break something.

My timing chain is tight as long as the pressure from the normal engine direction is there, but if I grab the crank pulley and rotate the engine back counter clockwise a slight bit, there is slop in the chain and I am not sure this is normal or not.

Perhaps its time to pull the top apart again and revisit this tensioner?

Pull the covers and redo the tensioner.
Never turn the engine counter clockwise, it will result in a skipped link.

At least you will know if the links all are in place. Reset the balance shaft chain also.

Take it off the engine, align the timing marks and links , then reinstall the chain guides and tensioner, the do the same with the timing chain.
if the balance shaft/ water pump chain is out of balance it could be setting off your code. Here is some instructional information on assembly

Well, I was 100 percent certain that the balance chain was installed correctly, (at least at that time I did the job) I triple checked the marks and they lined up exactly like the photos and various pictures I found on the net, but when I moved on to do the timing chain if I recall, I had to turn the engine some to get the crank marks and cam marks all line up so the balance chain was not on its original place when I assembled it. Does the balance chain and the timing chain all work together? Meaning they all must be on their respective marks all at the same time?

If my question is confusing, what I am asking is if I put the balance chain on its respective marks should the timing chain marks all line up also? Because if that is the case then that is my problem

Kevin, yes the balance shaft chain and the timing chain must all line up correctly, so that they will all be in time and balance.
