Possibly a blown motor?? Help!

Ok so i have an 06 hhr,my ex changed the oil and did not put the oil filter cap back on all the way. I did not know until the oil light came on while driving, but by then it had started squealing while driving. It was parked and not drove again. Could there be any damage done to the motor?? Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the site, there might be damage to the internal friction surfaces, you could put in a new oil filter and ensure the oil filter cap is tightened, then add engine oil. Start and see if that stops the squealing. Really nothing to lose!
if it starts , great .
If it’s damaged, we’ll there’s not much you can do , install a used engine or rebuilt engine.

I went ahead and bought a new engine for it,but if there was nothing wrong with the engine or the block,i was going to sell the engine i bought. And what do you mean by internal friction surfaces??

Internal surfaces that are subject to friction.

Camshaft bearings, crankshaft bearings, connecting rod bearings, piston pins, piston rings, cylinder walls, timing components. Anything that relies upon the engine oil for lubrication.

X2^^^^. If you have an extra engine, you’re ready in case the oil starved one is done.

How much oil was on the dipstick ?
Did you check the level after you found the cap loose/off ?
Was the engine soak with oil or just a film ?
Was the oil light on ?
Inquiring minds want to know .

That was not checked. It got loaded up on trailer and taken out to the parents house, where it has been sitting for quite some time. The oil light was on but like i said ,once it started squealing it was parked. I haven't messed with it cause i did end getting a different vehicle. But since i have some spare time, i would like to try and get it running if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It also started knocking, but could that just be from being low on oil? I've been told told that since it has all those fancy sensors, that the car would more than likely shut off before it did any major damage. Could i take parts from the spare engine and use in the current engine? Also, the spare engine is 2.4, but i was told it was 2.2 which is in the car now. So I'm not sure if that makes a difference either. Should i just buy a engine rebuild kit for 2.2 and rebuild it?

FYI. In the 2006, the 2.2 and 2.4 engines do not interchange. If your's has a 2.2 now, you would need a 2.2 from a 2006 model. That year was a "one year only" engine for the 2.2. Later years had a different version engine that does not swap directly with the 06.
My opinion. If you ran the engine out of oil to the point of squealing and knocking, then it's done. I wouldn't suggest thinking of rebuilding. Just swap in a used one.

So the spare engine is pretty much useless then? Should probably just buy a rebuild kit right?
