SEARCH "power steering failure". You will find hundreds of hits regarding the failure and easy replacement of the motor. There is even at least 1 thread including pictures of the repair.

OK, maybe only 38 hits.

My daughter has a 2010 that also randomly loses the power steering. Shut the car off and the power assist will work again. What is this generally caused by. Bad Motor, electrical connections?

Read post #2 above.

The electric motor is generally the culprit. It has an overload protection built in. Restarting the car resets the circuitry until it senses heat overload again.

When is GM going to recall these. With Congress and the NTSB investigating the faulty ignition lock cover up, it might be a good idea for GM to finally admit that it's the same as the Cobalt.

2007 HHR power steering electric assist motor failure

Hey HHR team,
I checked the forum and found out how to replace the motor. I asked my Chevrolet dealer if my car had a recall. He said not my VIN #. I bought the motor for $104+ tax. Changed it per pics and instructions on HHR site. It has not malfunctioned since.

Today April 1, 2014 GM is having a recall for all vehicles 2010 and earlier, including HHRs, for the power steering assist motor FAILURE which can cause a FATAL accident if you are not physically strong enough to steer. It's a real travesty they had a recall on Chevy Cruze for the same motor and was picky about all the other vehicles with this motor.

Thanks for all the help from this forum. wdg
