lately im hearing a very slight sound as i turn the steering wheel, it kind of sounds sandy/dry/scratchy..is this early detection that the motor is going?

 

I did not notice any abnormal sound before mine went out. Maybe some do and some don't.

It could be in the column and more near the steering wheel itself.

mine did not have any of those noises but the power steering light did light up!!

 

Clock spring dragging/grinding ?
