Seems that many install the oil filter to the cap and then screw it inside its engine cavity. I find it works better to install the oil filter inside the cavity first, then screw the cap. That way the cap can be screw by hand without resistance. I know for a fact that when the oil filter is not properly installed it can sludge the engine and of course shorten its lifespan. What is your thougts about the proper way to install the oil filter?
I install a fresh oil filter cap o ring seal, then place the filter into the oil filter cap, lube the two o rings with a touch of fresh 5W30 oil, then place the assembly into the oil filter cavity, start the oil filter cap into the threads by hand ,
then snug the cap tight with a 32 mm 3/8 drive shallow socket, an extension and a 3/8 drive ratchet
this is the method I have used on Ecotec engines , I’ve worked on and or owned since 2003, no problems so far!
What resistance? That tiny O-ring on the bottom? How is it possible to install it incorrectly? The only way I can imagine is to cross thread the cap. I learned long ago to not force things unless they are known force fits.
Either way is fine.
Like putting a new roll of toilet paper on the holder. Should it dispense off the top or the bottom ?
Again, either way is fine.
The inventor and patent holder installs it in the over the top position as shown in his patent in the late 1800s for the toilet paper roll.
There are tangs on the top of the filter to hold it into the cap, probably for good reason.
BTW, I buy the Delco filter with the cap (PF458G), only 3 bucks more. That way I also get the best cellulose media and new orings too.. And I don't get crushed or twisted filters from installation.
