Radio Problems

I have a 2006 HHR. Sometimes, the radio display turns fuzzy. The radio keeps playing fine like nothings wrong, but the radio display is nothing but random green dots and senseless charcters. If I lightly hit the side of the console near the radio, the fuzz goes away and everything is back to normal.

Does anyone know what is wrong? Do I have a loose wire or ground? Do I need to replace the radio? Is there a past problem history like this for HHR radios?

Thank you

Wiring is a possibility, but you may have the display in the head unit going bad. If a check of the wiring doesn't reveal any loose connections, that means you'll need to replace the head unit eventually. Fortunately they are fairly plentiful and relatively cheap, of course you could also use the opportunity to upgrade to a better aftermarket setup.

Sounds like the display assembly has solder joint issues if it gets slapped and then works briefly...

Hmmm. I've had the same "fuzzy" display on my 2010 a couple of times. Has been clear the last couple of weeks. If it would do it again I'll take it to the dealer for them to take a look. Post back what you find on yours.

Can the display unit itself be replaced, or do I have to replace the actual radio and display unit as one piece?

Thanks Michelle. I'll get this appointment on my own. Going to have the GMTU done soon and hope to take care of the radio problem at the same time. Thanks again.

Yes Gregs, the display can be repaired if you can do without a radio for a few days to a week, here's a link to the folks I've used in the past. They do excellent work at very reasonable prices.
