Rear hatch rattle

Car is pretty much rattle free...well at least in the dash area..not bad for 77k on it....one place it does make noise is the rear hatch plastic..

Not really a pain and I've been living it but was wondering if there are some common area places to look where rattles occur and any fixes? Hard to tell where the noise is coming from exactly

The only piece in my car that rattles is the right panel in the cargo area. I can place my hand or slide something up against it and it stops...

I used a product like Secondskin's Rattle pad. So far every area I've covered has been rattle free.

My hatch doesn't close properly; it takes a couple tries to close it so the warning sign doesn't appear on the dashboard.

So far, it's not enough of a pain to alert the service dept.

liftgate rattle

I have an '09 panel and have had a rattle in the rear since new. With my wife riding in the back on a rough road for about 5 miles we narrowed it down to the rear liftgate. My friend owns a GMC dealership and does all my service and warrenty work on my GM vechicles. There service dept. had 4 different techs working on finding that rattle. They had stripped out every rear side panel, floor panel, spare tire, jack, and the rear liftgate panel. They had it on the lift and checked everything underneath with a pry bar checking for the source. They finally determend that it was the tailgate latch part#13501871. The car now sounds like it should......QUITE.....They had spent a total of 6 hours on it and only get paid for 0.30 hours. Thank god for warrenties !

Hey Jeff, whats going on? Yes that would be me. I have been wondering, what finally happened with the exaust on your X? To answer your question, the latch is held in place with 3 bolts tightend to (89 lb in ). My buddy has a new '08 panel ( same problem ) and is going to have the latch replaced under warrenty also.............Take care,Ron

My license plate was rattling. It is only held on by 2 top screws, so the bottom is just left hanging. I stuck on some felt pieces but you could also use small pieces of rubber between the plate frame and the body. Now it just makes a dull thud. You could also drill 2 new holes to attach it at the bottom.

A) The license plate. I have seen new ones on lot with rubber bumpers.
B) when somebody pops the plastic rivets out that hold the interior panel onto the rear hatch the inside part is left to rattle around, almost impossible to get out!
C) Something around the muffler bangs around. I fixed some of mine when I replaced the front/cat pipe, but there is still a rattle.
