Rear Hatch Struts

I've notice lately when I open rear hatch, it doesnt open as freely and as far open as it used to do, struts feel tight when I open it the last 6 in or so...

Mine started out that way then started to make a popping noise when I open the hatch. I had then replaced and have not had any problems so far.

i hear a popping noise and notice that the hatch opens slower every time the cold weather comes around. As soon as it gets warm again it goes away

Gas expands in heat(press up)..compresses in cold(press down)..your struts are getting weak. This is normal over time..thats a lot of weight in that hatch.

OP's is an 08 model. And Dory is an early production 06 model and have not had any issues regarding the struts.

Also, the damping oil in the strut thickens in the cold weather which makes the hatch open slower. Better switch it to synthetic before winter really hits.

06s and 08s may of had different vendors produce the struts or they may have changed their manufacturing process.

Mine is a 6 month old 2008. I noticed the hatch struts acting weak shortly after buying it. With the winter weather they are not really lifting the hatch at all.

Regarding some of the comments regarding the hatch being heavy or the weather affecting them, I have to disagree.

We had a 2000 PT Dream Cruiser before this Chevy and the hatch never had any problem whatsoever for 5 plus years of midwest winters. In fact, while I like my HHR, the PT seemed to be MUCH better built in my opinion.

I never had ANY problems with that vehicle and this one already has 3 or 4 little nuisance issues...

So far I am a little nervous what the long haul will be like with this vehicle...

I use my car as a service vehicle and have it open and close about 6 or 7 times a day in all kinds of weather and temps. Seems a little slower when cold and was making noise till I hit the shaft with WD-40 then it quit.

Mine is an 08 and is on it's first winter. If it is gonna go bad it should for me I would think. Time will tell.
