First think is check the glove box rpo label and confirm you have the AP3 option
Next I would confirm all the key fob buttons work. This can be Done at most chain parts stores with there RF tester.
Also if there are any trouble codes stored the remote start may be turned off by the ECM until they are cleared

Hasn't worked in 5 years ? Why are you seeking answers now ?
Seriously though, just follow Lucky's post and you should be able to figure it out.
Fwiw. If it's a former rental car, most of those had the remote start disabled.

I already went thru the controls on the steering wheel.
i thought maybe i did not have it installed.
but i read somewhere it was standard equip?
and somewhere else, IF it it is on your remote, it IS equipped.
somewhere else had an elaborate reset process - tried that too.
so I gave up trying to get it working.
Thanks, I'll try the other things.

What about Lucky's question asking if you had the AP3 option ?
Also, as I stated, former rental cars don't usually have remote start enabled.
If you're looking for help with this, we can't help you unless you fill in the details.

when i hit the remote start - the lights come on but no start.
I just read about the rental cars.
I guess there is a hood switch somewhere?

Just to be sure, are you following these exact steps listed in the owners manual. ?
Also, is remote start enabled in the cars info center ? (you only stated you "went" thru the controls. Not what was listed in there.)
To start the engine using the remote start feature:
1. Aim the RKE transmitter at the vehicle.
2. Press and release the transmitter’s lock button,
then immediately press and hold the remote
vehicle start button for four seconds or until the
vehicle’s turn signal lamps flash.
When the vehicle’s engine starts, the parking lamps
will turn on and remain on while the engine is
running. The vehicle’s doors will be locked.
3. If it is the first remote start since the vehicle has been
driven, repeat these steps, while the engine is still
running, to extend the engine running time by
10 minutes. Remote start can be extended one time

There are endless threads about remote start and fobs.
So you looked at the controls on the steering wheel. Is remote start enabled?
You missed post 4&5?
There is no elaborate reset process, if the locks work.
Are you following the directions on the back of the fob? I.E.: press LOCK twice, then RS.
Is the security light on the dash lit?
Fobs are interchangeable, ones with RS button will work on cars without it and vice versa, if they are matched to the car.
There is a hood latch switch. Check the wires to the latch mechanism. It is not that block bolted onto the radiator support, that's the impact sensor.
I have never figured out what the book means by "aim the remote", it is RADIO not IR.
Are the doors closed?
