Interesting as my truck has the original injectors at 306k and other then one tear down for grins and giggles( changed the filter screens) all Ive done was add an occasional can of Berrymans B12..as a matter of fact whenever it picked up a miss at idle a can would clear it up. IMO it worked better then Techron..while working in parts all the area garages all either used Seafoam or Berrymans with the occasional Techron by customer request..I tend to go with what is known and 5 shops plus personal experience says it works.....as far as in the oil...well...I would only use a cleaner in extreme cases as a motor flush when absolutly necessary and not with a running motor,,I used a pump drive rod and spun it thru the system,,,but then I wiped a cam lobe off because of a defective lifter, flushed it twice.a third time with straight 30 non det oil and then ran it 100 changed again and never looked back..extreme cases..but don't see why it wouldn't work for preventive maint..if it unsticks the sticky stuff so it flushes out ,then why not? Not talking a motor with a zillion miles run on QS oil thats got more coke then a steel mill, that would be bad.
But then to each his own..

I'm not sure I would call products like this snake oil. "Mechanic in a can" might be a better term. There is some merit to using stuff like this in some situations, but I've never seen the need on an engine that's running good with no issues. In the past I've occasionally used additives to reduce smoking due to worn valve seals and other similar issues (old small block Chevy's were notorious for this!). The last 5 or 6 vehicles I've owned never gave me those types of problems. I drive my vehicles until they have anywhere from 150k to 250k. After that they usually end up in the hands of relatives who put another 100k on them. No additives. And none of this stuff can fix the normal wear of rings, pistons, and other moving parts. It only masks the effects of degraded mileage and performance for a short time.

As they say, "your mileage will vary". Some swear by certain additives, others say stay away. From what I've seen on various boards, the opinions are pretty split.

Sea Foam is a good carbon remover if used as directed. It's appears to be isopropyl alcohol with a mix of solvents and light oil added. I'm strongly opposed to putting any kind of solvent or dilutant in the oil of a running engine. It doesn't take much to toast a bearing. If you want to flush it out, toss in 5 qts of whatever oil's on sale along with a cheap filter, and drain it out after a few days. Then put in the good oil and filter.

wow!

i added 5 oz to the oil , drove it 5 miles , easy, never more than 3000rpm.then changed the oil. i put 0w 20w mobil 1. i put 10oz seafoam in half tank of gas. i drank the remaining oz. i got a 2mpg gain!!! has anyone ever seen this mpg gain by adding thinner oil??? maybe my fuel system was dirty. i have been adding tectron fuel treatment regularly. i guess the tectron was doing nothing. i think the mpg gain was from a little of both. i will definatly be adding some more seafoam to my gas , after few more miles.

I say it was the oz you drank that caused the increase. It's just as likely.

catdaddy.....

you must be getting about 30 MPG/city (maybe even 40 MPG/highway) with all the "add-ons" that gave you additional mileage.

and that is with me driving 70-80 mph on a large part of my 275 mile route. if i would slow down , i am sure it would stay above 31 , or maybe even 32. on paper it came to 30.48 .......275 miles ,,, 9.021 gal. when i first purchased it was showing 24mpg on the dic from the previous owner--really doesn't mean much....... but i was only getting 24-26 before i made any changes. i really have no way to document weather i gained any hp , since i never tested 0-60 or 1/4 mile or dyno before i made any changes. but it does seem to have more power. every 2mpg i get saves me over $40/month , so i am happy with each gain i get , and the small changes i have made are quickly paying for themselfs. most of my route is done before most people are out of bed , so that makes a big difference in the small amount of driving i do in the city. 08 panel 2lt 2.4 auto . oh , and i had a pretty heavy load this mourning with 6 !&^%$*& car batteries.

When I change my oil, my MPG goes up by 2 MPGs that is going from mobil1 to new mobil1 but I also go beyond the 3k mile interval and let oil level go to about 25% or less...
