Service Engine Soon / Oxygen Sensor

I had the SES light come on this morning after I started my HHR. Seemed to run fine. Took it to the dealership to find out what was going on and was told that my #2 oxygen sensor was detached.

My question is, has anyone ever had this simply come unplugged before? The dealership told me that if reattaching it doesn't fix it, it will have to be replaced for approx $400 including labour. That seems a bit much.

Check your owners manual I think the emissions are under warranty for 8 years. My 96 astro was 8 years or 130,000 KM had one go at 128,000 and got it for free and put it in myself. If you can change a spark plug you can do it your self.

No! Did you just get some service done or did you get an oil change recently? Those connectors don't just fall off the sensor.

Thanks GTOMIKE, I never thought that there might be extended emissions warranty - I'll check it out!

Nope, no recent service work. I wonder if it's possible for it to be unplugged and not show up as an error until days or weeks later?

Unfortunately my emissions are under the same 3 yr / 60000km warranty as everything else. A little disappointing.

Thought I would use this existing thread to comment and pose a question. Comment: the plug takes GREAT effort to disconnect, what with tabs and interlocks, so I agree with ChevyMgr that it is virtually impossible for it to disconnect on its own. Now my question: how long does a sensor last and perform at 100%? I have mine out and on the exterior shell there is a coating of deposits but all the "vents" are clear. I have 25,000 miles on it.

Is that a Canadian thing? Down here major parts are covered for a long time. Ox sensor may not fall into the category for us (US) too.
