From the OWNERS MANUAL

Electric Power Steering
If the engine stalls while you are driving, the power steering assist system will continue to operate until you are able to stop your vehicle. If you lose power steering assist because the electric power steering system is not functioning, you can steer, but it will take more effort.

If you turn the steering wheel in either direction several times until it stops, or hold the steering wheel in the stopped position for an extended amount of time, you may notice a reduced amount of power steering assist. The normal amount of power steering assist should return shortly after a few normal steering movements.

The electric power steering system does not require regular maintenance. If you suspect steering system problems and/or the POWER STEERING message comes on, contact your dealer for service repairs. See DIC Warnings and Messages .

I don't know CCK-you are a dangerous kid. If I ever get out that way I think I'll bypass your county, or at least have someone else drive up to me at a diner.... Falling off loading docks, losing brakes... Please don't go outside and look at any comets or falling stars or your town could end up on the news.

Question scary experience

I just had this happen on my 08 HHR half an hour ago. Two blocks from home, on a narrow residential street some nitwit was barreling along straight at me. I had to swerve into a driveway to avoid getting hit head-on, and in the process, the power steering went out. It came back to life when I shut off and restarted the engine.

But this was a relatively minor evasive maneuver. What if I'd not already finished steering the car to a safe place when that happened?

Ha ha, but (knock on wood) I've never been in an accident, or even hit anything. Never dented or scratched a car even! I did hit a mailbox with the mirror on my truck when I was leaning to pick something up, but luckily my mirror just turned in, and the mailbox wasn't too bad.
