SS Overheating?

Had a strange thing happen today with my SS. After driving a few miles this morning my high temp alarm and light came on with the guage matching (needle reading only one line from max). While slightly panicked, I pulled over but did not shut down immediately. Upon raising the hood I found no signs of over heating, proper fluid level in the recovery tank and the fan running. I got back in the car and watched the gauge max out and then return to normal levels with the high temp light going out as well. Have drove it some more with no issues. The only other thing happening at the time was my low fuel alarm had gone off just prior. Any thoughts or has anyone else had faulty temp readings? 45K on car, no mods, and no damage to system or external leaking.

Sorry if this should have gone under HHR SS.

Hopefully not the ECU, called the dealer and they were thinking a temporarily stuck thermostat, going to take it in and see if any codes pop up.

Was also wondering if you should see coolant when removing the pressure cap? I had no low coolant alarm, and like I said the recovery tank does apper to have the correct level (three inches from bottom ?) even though it is impossible to see.

Start the car and while warm not hot and add fluid in to the radiator directly and when you see it at the top you are full.

I was thinking a possible air bubble in the system due to low coolant level? The recovery tank should have more than what you describe though. 3" from the bottom sounds fairly low.

Thanks for the replies, Took to dealer, showed no codes on a hand held reader. They have the same reader that I have. Would have thought they would have had something better and didn't know those readers would indicate a thermostat or cooling problem. The temp guage did get up to about 3/4 and digital reading was at 235 on the way to the dealer but cooled down in a few seconds.

Sounding like a thermostat issue, which if this is the case I was happy to hear will be covered under warrenty. Dealer stated that they have seen thermostat problems. I will post again after they are done with it.

asanti, I tend to agree but there is no marking on the tank as far as I can see, have you looked at the drawing that shows proper tank level in your manual? Take a look, very hard to tell what they are trying to show.

That's odd that there wasn't a stored code...I would have thought it would save it, unless you've driven too much since it happened, it will erase. Honestly to me, it would sound like a thermostat issue...but an air pocket would do that too.

Let us know what they come back with!

Agreed it's really hard to tell where the HOT and COLD full lines are! I know someone posted pictures up here somewhere and they put their own markings on the recovery tank. Try a search and it may come up for you (sorry I can't be much more help than that right now).

Well, the dealer called back this afternoon....found nothing except a "slightly" low coolant level. They told me that they could not duplicate the overheating issue and produced no codes showing that the high temp light or alarm came on. I was told that a code usually shows up if an overheating issue occurs. So, sounds like you may be correct Allex that there was an air pocket causing this condition. Thanks again for the replies and advice.
