Steering Lock

I just noticed my SS doesn't have or has an nonfunctional steering lock. I have the manual tranny so it should have it. I even looked it up in the manual and it says I should have it, but its generic for all HHR's so I'm not sure if for whatever reason the SS doesn't have it.

Anyone else notice this in their car?

I'm not sure if the manuals have them or not, but I know that most cars made today do not have that on them anymore. Not sure why, but all the new cars and trucks I work on don't have them.

I know that many of the new cars have a much wider range of motion before the lock hits. How far have you tried turning the wheel? Just wondering if it's there, just farther out than you expected.

Well I was driving in the middle of no where and then the road was shut down from a major accident so about 50 cars was ahead of me. When they finally started to let people through (extremely slowly), I just rolled down the hill with the engine off not even realizing that my steering wheel wasn't locking. My brother pointed it out, but I dont think I turned the wheel half way, but that seems like a lot to turn before it would lock.

But had you removed the key? I don't believe the lock kicks in until the key is removed and the ignition breaks connection with the PassKey.

Does having a steering lock depend on whether the ignition is in the steering wheel column or on the dash?

No. My 03 Impala had the ignition in the dash, and it still locked the steering when you twisted the wheel far enough. The lock is electronically engaged now instead of mechanically engaged by physically turning the ignition to lock.
