Steering Rack

My daughter's car (2006 1LT with 2.4L) has a steering problem. When I drove it, the steering wheel chattered when it was near the center (there was no load to either side).

It might be the intermediate shaft or maybe the rack.

I am getting some conflicting information on which rack fits her car.

There are two GM part numbers for HHR racks: 25956915 and 25956916.

Rock Auto says 25956915 fits the LT model.

Other sources say its 25956916 is for the LT model. Also some sources reference a "soft ride" versus a "sport" suspension.

Anyone know for sure which one it is?

Thanks
Steve

numbers are different
but they seem to be identical..
unless one is $5 cheaper than the other

Which suspension does the car have?
I don't think there is much difference in "fit", just soft (FE1) or sport (FE3), I would get the "sport". Other FE1 parts are mostly deprecated if favor of FE3.
My guess is the difference is lock to lock turns. One being more than the other. I would not notice.

915 is sport suspension (FE3)
916 is soft suspension (FE1)

Take the rack out if Oldblue! It’s not that old! The ISS is fairly new too!

Ok, so the sticker in the glove box says FE1.

At Rock Auto, the new AC Delco rack, which includes the outer tie rod ends, is $217 for either FE1 or FE3 rack.

The Cardone remanufactured rack is $114 for the FE1 rack, but doesn't include the outer tie rod ends (which I want to replace also). A pair of outer tie rod ends will run about $50 for a total of about $164.

Any reason the AC Delco rack is worth $50 more than the Cardone part (new vs reman)?

I would take it out except it's currently in a spot where its hard to get to the rack.

If I remember it’s a 916 rack or FE3

maybe try the ISS to possibly eliminate that being the issue

I looked at the rack yesterday. It's definitely the rack itself that's bad. There is slop inside the rack.
