There is damage that is causing the lights and hard shifting. The computer is in self preservation mode.

I am now thinking about timing chain and guides and tensioners andsuch. If it is not giving up any meaningful codes, it is hard to tell. Consider consulting a professional, that will probably be cheaper than throwing parts at it in the long run.

Thanks donebrew. I just went for a 4 mile ride...TC light not on and shifting fine. CEL light is on. I guess I will drive a few days and see what happens. I know folks that drive with CEL lights on for years at a time, but I JUST DON'T like that idea especially with the hard shift. I will post later with what is going on with it...Thanks for all your help and ideas.

You can clear the CEL by disconnecting the negative battery cable, or by simply pulling that large fuse next to the ground post near the battery for a few minutes.

It sure would be nice if you could clear the light by removing a fuse under the hood rather than going into the rear wouldn't it?

Or get a scanner, or a $12 OBDII adapter that interfaces to your smart phone with Torque (from an appstore). 3 choices.

If you are adventurous you could disconnect the red wire from the fuse box, but don't.

update...went to 3 parts stores to get the code read...only one scanner read code (P2119). The other 2 stores scanners could not read code...came home and checked fuses....cig lighter fuse blown...replaced fuse...went back to 1 of the stores that their scanner would not work...got code P0013 and P0014...ordered part (exhaust camshaft position actuator solenoid)...pretty confident this will solve problem.
QUESTION...WHY DID ONE OF THE SCANNERS READ A CODE BUT THE OTHERS WOULD NOT(MESSAGE SAID NOT COMMUNICATING)?
EVEN WITH ALL THAT SAID THE SCANNER THAT WOULD READ THE CODE WITH THE FUSE BLOWN RETURNED A CODE OF p2119 ONLY.
I WILL UPDATE EVERYONE WHEN I GET THE PART REPLACED

Ahhh P0013/14 - yeah the exhaust solenoid should resolve it for you. Keep us posted on how it works out for you. It's an easy easy job to replace, as you are likely aware already.

I'm not sure about that issue of the downloaded code with the blown fuse - unless it blew the fuse once they downloaded the code. The only time I have seen that "unable to communicate" is when an older reader that was not compatible with OBDII-CAN was connected - but the fuse was good in that situation.

That's one of those "crooked repair shop" scanners. It will tell you something is wrong when it isn't. Just another way to sell you parts you don't need.
