By 30 CAD do you mean the AC Delco 131-158 thermostat. 180 F degrees?

There is no need to drain when changing the t-stat. Opening at 70C will for sure cause P0128 which in turn causes the --- temp readout and no AC.
Sounds like it was a 71C t-stat not a 82C.

Motorad,
and therein lies your problem.
AC Delco 131-158 ONLY!
It's been proven numerous times that the AC Delco in the only one that works.
Sounds trivial but that's what works.
Ask me how I know.

Me too, I’ve tested several different brands and only the AC Delco 131-158 works consistently.
you can try to save money, but you won’t have AC cause you’ll have a P0128 code.

But it was the originally equipped, made in USA, STC thermostat that deteriorated. I had a hard time finding where the replacement Motorad was made but eventually, in very small print there it was -Isr**l.

RockAuto is not the only vendor.
The price has recently tripled.

By now I assume you've figured out that the thermostat has no idea what the sensor knows, and that It only knows how hot the coolant that's touching it is.

Agreed!

But...

One exception that everyone keeps ignoring; I'm 100% sure Mahle, an OEM supplier, makes the ACD thermostat. Unlike the others, the Mahle is indistiguishable from the ACD. I put then both in a pot of water on the stove and they opened and closed lockstep.

The Mahle is no cheapie, but usually substantially less than ACD.
