Is there a way to get the car out of park?

Can I manually get my car out of park? The button on my shifter broke and I want to remove the handle, but need to put it into n to do this. Can I manually get it out of park?

Usually there is a small access panel on the side of the base. right on top.

I can't cause I don't have a auto HHR. But usually there is a little tab to access.

Like here above the P

to the right of the shifter on the opposite side of P

You may be able to do this without getting it into Neutral, not sure but it's worth a shot. (if you mean knob when you say handle???? not sure where you are with this, you've got two threads going and very little info) I just looked through a few posts here on the forum and the service manual for the '06......

This thread... https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/show...val#post267588 says it has to be in neutral...... the '06 service manual shows it being done in park. I don't know the difference there.

At the bottom of the first page of that thread a forum member, GDZHHR, mentions twisting the chrome ring one half turn to get access to the screw to remove the knob...... I just went out to my '07 and leaving it in park twisted the chrome trim one half turn and was able to pull it down enough and could access the screw........ (no I didn't take it apart because I have nothing wrong with mine but could get at the screw) The chrome trim would go down further in neutral but there's enough room in park, barely.

I know you have a broken car in your driveway, it's frustrating, and a lot of people have looked at your requests for help and you aren't getting any answers.... I doubt highly this is because you are being snubbed or that nobody cares..... to be honest I don't think those reading your posts know the answer or if they do, they don't know where you are in the disassembly/repair process....

I hope what I just posted helps, If I'm way off base and it's not the shift knob that you can't remove then a further description of where you are in the process may help generate the answers you need. Not trying to be mean, but I'm one of those guys that has been reading your threads and up until just now had no idea what to say.

@Gas Man....... I don't know if there's anything like that on the HHR auto...... don't see anything on mine. Seems getting the knob off and then the trim on the console is the only way to get access. I donno.

Grey... do the HHRs auto have a bypass button thing like I posted above? I believe those are to get it out of Park without the key or in this case dead.

I got it off!!! The problem was this, with the shifter in park, I could not see inside of the button to see how it worked. Dahhh, I used a mirror. There is a sliding gear inside of the button. This needs to be pushed down with a screwdriver, then, wahlah! Got it in neutral and pulled the handle off.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts! Now to get at the sticky soda!

just have to get a new handle. I think it would be easier than trying to fix this one. Can I get a different one, or does it have to be the same one?
