Top or bottom Engine Replacement

I threw a rod today on my 2008 HHR 115K miles. 2.2 automatic.

I found a low mile engine, same year, same In engine id (D).

My question is, can I pull the engine from the top or does it have to come out the bottom? Anyone know where I can find a manual for engine removal?

Well, I ordered a replacement engine today (18K on it). The picture seems to show that one of the heater core lines off the water feed line is kinked. I imagine that I can use my old one for that but I can't find any reference to seals for the water feed line.

Any suggestions on that and on what thermostat to use?

Another Question. The new engine has a water pump on it and the engine has 18K on it. Should I trust that it is ok or should I change it? If so, which brand of pump do you recommend?

If it really has 18 K, I'd trust it. Brand doesn't make much diff, get rebuilt (they come with seals usually) about the same price, arount $40-$50. Look at the one you are getting, some have a plastic impeller which may make a difference to you.

That is what I was thinking. Thanks for the help.

Well, I got my new engine. It guides in next week. One problem. There is a crack on the block for one of the oil pan bolts. Looks old, maybe original build. I'll try to add s pic when I get to my computer

115k is awfully low mileage to have a thrown rod. I wonder what caused that?
