Waterpump replacement woes

http://vid135.photobucket.com/albums...psxw8nyqvs.mp4

Hi everyone. I just had my local shop replace my water pump (80k miles). I gave them the tool to hold the chain in place (wanted to make sure), along with all genuine AC/Delco parts. Sure enough, I have the whine. They swore they used the tool and everything was tightly in place and nothing slipped. When I went back,I gave them a copy of instructions on how to reset the tensioner. They did, but still have the whine. The mechanics there told me that everything is fine, and despite the noise, nothing will be damaged or wear out any quicker. I find that hard to believe. I checked with mechanics I know at my local Chevy dealer, and they told me I may have to get a new tensioner, along with a new chain.

Thoughts on this?

If the mechanic gave you the car back with the check engine light on, you may need a new mechanic. If the CEL just came back on, you may have a new problem. Either way, you should pull the codes and see what's goin' on.

Lee this is a case of cutting corners, now by that I mean , if the water pump needs to be replaced, replace the timing chain gears and tensioner, along with the balance shaft chain and gear and tensioner.
I know hindsight is 20/20, and it's easy to armchair quarterback, but I would replace the whole kit and kaboodle!
It could save you from replacing the whole engine in the near future.

The car has had codes for years from the traction control issue. Recently, I have the misfire cylinder one code I have already swapped the coil packs and put in new spark plugs, so the next step there is for new injectors They told me they checked for codes and found none for this problem, but I will check later today.

For now, the water pump is a new Delco one, along with a new thermostat. Water temp is perfect, with nothing coming from weep hole and no steam from under hood any more. Just the noise/whine issue. So I guess the next step there is to replace the chains and tensioner. I understand Chevy sells an entire kit for that rebuild

For more on the codes, see this thread https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/prob...pection-58620/

To start with the chain tensioner in question is the balance chain, which is under the chain cover, not the one you can get to easily. Neither one needs adjusting, they are pressure loaded self adjusting units..

The last water pump I did produced a whine, I returned it and got a new one.

That whine sounds like my alternator did when I was spilling coolant on it. I think it was either the belt or the bearing didn't like getting wet.

What traction control issue causes a CEL? The other way around does make some sense.

Thanks for the info and images. Now I have to figure out what the problem is. Could the water pump itself be defective and making the noise? I know people said that the tensioner is not adjustable, but there is a tech sheet that gives instructions on how to remove it and reset it.

That ids the old style for a 2.2 non-VVT engine, you don't so much reset it as put it back together after it comes apart. The best way is to replace it with the new style.

After I RE-did mine the whine went away. That's a lot of labor for a bad part. Mine was NAPA, replaced with a Advance rebuilt.

As a side note; some have a plastic impeller, some have a metal impeller. I don't know if it makes a difference.
