My buddy's "09 LS 2.2 has a front wheel bearing going out. What is the ballpark cost of such a repair from an independent mechanic?

Depends on what he charges for parts. $40-$360 each and flat rate 1 hour for 1 1.8 hours for both.

It would be more accurate to ask the shops that are potentially going to do the work.

Yes, ask the shops. I would go with a mom and pop place, as bearings are one of those jobs that sounds hard and complicated, but are one of the EASIEST jobs to do. especially for a shop with a lift. on the HHR so long as they aren't rusted on, its like a 20 minute job.

To my defense, I was thinking about my fathers wheel bearing he changed when he was down here visiting from Vermont. All original with 260,000 miles of wintery goodness. Torch and ALOT of hammering until all four of our arms were noodles but we got it done. LOL

Thanks, guys. I was just trying to prepare him. I had figured -
$125 for the front hub, an hour of labor at $100 and misc for a total of about $260. Sound right?

That's not bad. I paid about $300 earlier this year. I used to do them myself but I'm getting tired of pounding on them. And old.
