To clean the MAF only use a spray cleaner designed for cleaning the MAF, it is a delicate device.

You can clean the throttle body while you’re at it.
A little more back ground on this 2006 HHR. My wife is original owner, original motor/transmission, 265,000. I had in the dealer shop a couple of times when it was under warranty, then I took it from there. Changed plugs and coil pack within last year or 25,000 miles, however I didn't realize plug type was critical, I just went w/what recommended on parts site. Went ahead and replaced MAF sensor and test drove a short distance, so far so good on the shifting. The wife is off to work, check engine lite off, shifting good. I'll keep you posted what happens bt end of day,

Additionally when I replaced MAF sensor last night, I also cleaned the aftermarket air filter and didn't put any oil on it. Probably end up putting stock filter back on as soon as I get a new intake hose.

The more I read about the oiled reusable air filter, the more I'm sure I'll never put one on.

I’ve driven many years and miles with a K&N oiled filter, the trick is to wash them once a year, let dry over night, only apply the cleaner to the dirty side of the filter and rinse from the clean side out. Then you apply a light spray of air cleaner oil to the outside or dirt side only, never soak the gauze filter and never spray oil on the inside or clean side of the filter. I do not spray until a red film shows, that’s way to much oil

Thats great info on K&N filter. I'm glad to see that if properly maintained an aftermarket (cold air intake) can be used in place of that monstrosity of a filter system it comes from the factory with.

I have the OEM air box with a drop in flat K&N filter, no better or worse the the K&N FIPK unit I had on Oldblue

Oldblue’s setup

The GMPP dry filter kit was nice

Most "cold air intakes" we see here are not cold air at all.

That’s the same OEM black woolly worm hose on our left headed over past the washer bottle to the hole in the inner fender, so no improvement in air temperature or air flow. The black plastic box sits right on the valve cover warming the air with the filter inside , so nope not cold air. My dual snorkel box I fabricated was still on Oldblue when the engine expired at over 400,000 miles

This 3 inch metal dryer vent tube caught fresh air through a shop vac pipe above the radiator.

Thanks much guys, by following your advise and doing exactly as you said I'm happy to say after two days and 170 miles, the wife's HHR is shifting perfectly, running strong and most importantly no CEL after being on for four years.
