I've had this issue for a while as well, 08 5 speed. Seems to do it mainly if I accelerate from low rpm's in 3-5 gear. It changes tones/loudness with rpm and eventually goes away around 3000-3500rpm.

A/C Whine

Well, I had to make an appointment for 2 PM Monday to have some "Test Pilot" run the HHR around to see if he hears the whine! I told the Service Advisor last week that you don't have to take the car out on the road to hear it, just run it around in the lot at 10/15 mph! Guess the "Service Advisors" can't do that themselves. That's when it's noticable, not so much after you speed up! You turn the Air off, and the whine isn't there, so I don't know what else it could be? I bought and "PAID" for the extended Warranty 4 Years ago, (Before the Freebies!) and if it needs fixing, I want it fixed!! AGAIN!!

Well, It turned out the ""Whine" was actually something internal with the A/C compressor itself, so they replaced it! To the tune of $857.00! (Including labor of course)
Thank God I bought the extended warranty 4 Years ago, didn't cost me a cent! What gets me is the HHR only has 17,500 miles on it, even though we've had it for four Years Well, at least the replacement compressor itself has a Lifetime Warranty for as long as we own the car, which will be a long, long time!

I had this happen on my Lumina, and it was the A/C compressor. It was like it when I bought it, and then I had it fixed. It would whine with the engine. Really annoying.

Is this more of an annoyance thing or something that need attention?

Mine has had a whine in something related to engine RPM's, when its cold, but disappears as soon as the engine warms up. It hasn't changed an iota in the almost three years I have had it.

Probably depends on the cause. Mine has a whine too when it's cold out, then it goes away after the engine warms up. So that doesn't bother me after 4 Years. But last Summer there was a whine that turned out to be the compressor. That WAS a problem! Luckily I had bought the extended warranty, so no charge for replacing it.

mine sounds like a squeek, vibration that seems to die if I turn the blower off .
