Good Grease or Not

This weekend Whuile doing my brakes one of my caliper pins was a bit stuck, the culprit being a tear in the boot.

I need to replace my Caliper guide pin boots later this afternoon but I dont have any brake component specific grease at home (accidentally threw away the stuff that came with the pads). What I do have is a big can of the Lucas Oil Xtra Heavy Duty Grease in my grease gun. Is that stuff okay to use on the caliper pins?

While I am here asking questions, I can never which pin goes where. Does the one with the rubber end go in top or bottom. Thanks in advance! I neglected to check the right side pins, I hope they are free moving .

I don't think the type of grease matters that much, high temp is what counts.

I don't remember which boot goes where, Look on the other side?

Okay, well it says its for high temp so it should be good.

I dont necessarily know if the other side would have the pins in correctly either LOL. I unfortunately neglected to service the pins when I didn the brakes about a year ago, resulting in my nearly tragic failure of the pin. I got it out with some gentle twisting and pulling with a pair of vice grips, re-greased and put it back in but didnt pay attention to which pin it was. I remember finding a thread about it here a while ago but I cant seem to find it now unless I am not using the right words. One pin is all metal and the other has some sort of rubber or whatnot at the top half.

I think the one with no gasket goes on the bottom.

I’ve always used a quality silicone grease, any parts place carries it.

Well, it worked great. I made a rookie mistake when putting the new boots on and had some trapped air in the pin hole, once I figured out that I needed to hold the boot down, insert the greased pin, then they all functioned perfectly. Donbrew was correct, the pin with a gasket goes up top. The one pin with the ripped boot was so bad I had to use various grits of sand paper to get the gunk off. Everything is working great now. Surprisingly, pedal is tighter too, and unsurprisingly my shaking brakes are gone. I was going to make a PSA video for the Facebook page but by the time I remembered to start filming I was done with the job. so far so good!
