Isn't it possible that when the balance sprocket broke, it may have caused some minor damage to the timing set also? After 30,000 miles, that minor damage has turned into this.
Better have a look behind the timing cover, I'm sure your shop is recommending that also.
It would be odd for the balance chain to break and NOT cause damage. It is behind the timing chain.
I am having a hard time imagining a circumstance that would cause the balance chain to "give up". The balance shafts spin freely and the water pump has fairly light resistance.
The balance chain only keeps a 4 cylinder engine from self destructing and has it's own tensioner inside the cover. And drives the water pump. Wear on it is minimal.
I guess it could makes so much vibration that the sensors would limit rpm.
thanks Donbrew but I’m leaning more toward the timing chain we’re the tensioner has failed and and possibly stretch the chain or skip a tooth .. won’t know until we open her up for heart surgery .. it is just funny how it starts up on a dime at the shop and rev her and no rattle .. so we’re going to put it on a scanner and see what’s going on ..see how it’s firing but time will tell ..thanks guys ..
Never mind wasting your time with a scanner and hoping there’s a quick fix, the timing chain for what ever reason has enough slack to skip a tooth, tensioner, I four it at 30,000 miles.
Broken front guide is more likely from over torquing the bolt, which would break.
Skimpy wee 6mm bolt to hold the guide.
A replacement bolt threads into the head plug hole.
These cure the broken top bolt issue.
Now please stop driving it around before your take out pistons and who knows what if the timing chain snaps!

well update the timing chain has stretch the tensioner could not compensate at its limits .. so the balance chain is fine only 30000 on it so I’m ordering a Cloyes timing chain kit and I got get a crank shaft bolt .. so I was wondering if I can reuse the timing cover gasket? I know the valve cover gasket can .. thanks to all the guys help

I have done a couple of timing chain replacements. The timing cover gasket usually bends and kinks when removed (its thin sheet metal based). Rock Auto shows a new Fel-Pro gasket for $13. I wouldn't take a chance on having to go through the labor of removing the timing cover again for a leaking gasket for $13.
