MP3 playing in LS

The radios in the LS do not play mp3 according to Chevy. All LTs will play mp3. I suspect there is a quick hack that will allow the radio in the LS to play mp3, usually by pushing a sequence of buttons on the radio. Anyone know how to do this?

Although the headunits are similar in appearance, I suspect the differences are in hardware. ie hacking won't do the job.

One might think so but my experience with video disk players shows they are easily programable to play dvds from other countries. Normally the codes prevent this but with a couple of button pushes most will ignore the codes and play the disk. I suspect that something like this works with these radios. It does not make sense to have multiple types of radios when one will do it. The cost is the same because the chips are the same. You might be surprised to find what is blocked in your cars computers. Any way, its worth the try to see if any hackers have mastered the radios.

I don't think the non MP3 radios can be programmed to play MP3 files, but if they could, you would need a VCI number, which only GM technical assistance employees can give or send to a dealership employee, and then it would have be programmed into the BCM by a TechII scanner. But if that is possible I don't see GM giving that information out. They want to make the extra dollars on selling the upgraded radio units.

2007 LS here. Stock radio, nothing special and I am able to hook my mp3 and play it, and can play. Played a Ipod, an I pod Shuffle, and a cheap creative soulutions mp3, all work just fine.

I think he's talking about putting mp3's on a CD-R and playing them through the stereo. The head units between the LS and LT are completely different. The displays are different and the LS units cannot display title or folder information. They're just "dumb" CD players with no microprocessor.
