Okay, I finally received my experimental parts so I installed the former CGS air intake system this weekend.

First, a little background. Even though I have run K&N type air filters in the past, I am by no means of fan of this type of air filtering. While oiled gauze in a wire mesh does allow for better air flow, I am of the opinion that the increased air flow is at the cost of increased risk of particles getting past the filter. I am also not very fond of the lack of an air box. Therefore, when I won the CGS system at Tom's Farm this year, the first thing in my head was to figure out how I can make this into somthing that I would be comfortable with.

Having been an avid off-roader for many years, I have pretty much been raised on oiled two-stage foam filters. I am also a firm believer that if you are not going to use an air box, then you should be using a pre-filter - especially if using a K&N type filter.

My solution was to outfit the CGS air intake with a UNI two-stage foam filter, then cover it with a pre-filter from Outerwears.

I also removed the CGS decal to save weight and cut down on under the hood air drag. ;-)

Take a look at the pictures I uploaded in my gallery.

Thank sweet Baby Jesus for added torque steer from your intake! Plus it sounds cool.

Jay - send me some shots with the air filter off as well.

Hey Randy -
You definitly know your stuff. Where can one obtain a set up like that? I really want to try and find something that shaped like the ones you see one big bore V Twin carbs. Point being, smaller in diameter and maybe tapered. They sound cool, no? When you WOT with these it sounds like its trying to suck the hood in.

Hey Randy,

Your mod could definitely have it's own thread! We are with Don on this as our current CGS Air Cleaner has over 10,000 miles on it and is time to service! We have begun to notice a small ruff idle and are in fear that the injectors have become contaminated! Please update your post with any specifics on the exact parts used and where's the best place to get them! Also in your pictures one of the covers is Maroon in color and looks damaged? Optical Erusion?

Let Us Know!

The two stage foam filters can be purchased direct from UNI.

http://www.unifilter.com/

The pre-filters can be purchased direct from Outerwears. They also will make custom fit pre-filters if they don't already have what you are looking for. In most cases you can give them your existing filter manufacturer name and part number and they can check to see if they make a pre-filter for it.

http://www.outerwearsracing.com/

I'll post the specific part numbers of the pre-filter and two stage filter that I used later this evening.

In regards to the cover being maroon and looking damaged, the cover in the picture is acutally black but you are seeing the red 1st stage filter through it, which gives it the maroon look. I bought a black one and a blue one. The Outerwear is actually a very thin and flexible polyester mesh, so it will not have a perfectly cylindrical shape.

Here's the information on the two-stage foam air filter and pre-filter:

The UNI filter I used is a 2-1/2" inside diameter flange X 4" outside diameter X 6" long. Part number is UP6245ST. Cost is $20.

The Outerwears pre-filter I used is a 4-1/4 oiameter X 6" long, color black. Part number is 20-1190-01. Outerwears come in many colors.

So far this set up seems to be working quite well with the CGS intake tube.

Randy
