Boost Problems

New to the forum and to turbo cars, have loved the HHR from day one. A year later and I’m having an issue with building boost pressure. The other day I was on the highway passing a car and the boost gauge pegged 30psi so I let off the throttle then got back on it and it wouldn’t build past 5psi ( 15 is normally the most I see) but it sounds like the wastegate is stuck open or something and it’s letting the boost out before it builds up, again never dealt with turbos so I don’t know what I’m talking about. But intermittently it will build some boost then the blow off will studder at different points sometimes 5 sometimes 15 or 20 but mostly it won’t build anything past 5
no lights on the dash and I haven’t hooked the scanner up yet to check for pending codes
just looking for some guidance

Hi Chadwick, to the forums!!

This is very likely the boost control solenoid, or the wire connector to it. Here are some threads about the issue
https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/ss-s...t-issue-56842/

https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/hhr-...ent-how-56759/

https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/ss-s...estions-55719/

The replacement solenoid is a BorgWarner 179425
The GM P/N for the connector seems to be 19115592

Is this an automatic or stick car? Also, do you have the upgrade done to your car?

Manual

It’s a manual, and no upgrades that I know of, it does have a cold air intake That does have a new MAF connector wired to the harness
and muffler delete
other than that I’m not aware of anything else being done to the car. The dealer I got it from didn’t know his ******* from his elbow

Does the label on the gas door say 91 octane recommended or required?

My bet is on RJ's suggestion. It's very likely the boost control solenoid

Alright so I’m having trouble finding the boost/wastegate control solenoids and from what I can gather online there is one on the turbo and one on the intake, I can’t find either part and I’ve read the only way to get it is off of another turbo. Has anyone tried fixing the defective one? Or where can I find the solenoids?

Yes, the boost control solenoid is mounted directly to the turbo. I had no trouble replacing it from the bottom. All your questions were answered in the threads that I linked to, the best is the third link. Did you read them?

Google the BorgWarner part number above.
