maybe a PM to customer service will help, this is a known issue, and there maybe some help available, you don't know until you ask! I know the 08 is past any warranty but a known issue is a know issue!

x2 - it sure doesn't hurt to ask. Often the dealer will go to bat for you with GM itself, if you have a good relationship with them. Another option is to go to GM directly using the phone number contacts in the Owners Manual.
