Don't worry about pending or historic/stored codes. Only ones that light the CEL,
If you want to pass a smog test stop clearing codes. Every time you do the testing has to start all over again, it takes a week of normal daily driving to make the EVAP test run.
The important part is the I/M readiness, once they all pass you can get smogged.

Alright what is I/M readiness?
I'm having a hard time understanding exactly what pending means.
The "check gas cap" warning pops up but does not trigger a CEL. Only some time after did it pop up, and not at the same time as the check gas cap warning.
My car has started making a knock near the middle/front of the engine. Maybe a little on top. Almost like a diesel. Could this actually be related to the knock sensor?
I/M is inspection/ maintenance monitors, you should be able to find it on your code reader. There are about 7 tests I think. In California, they all have to be "ready" except EVAP. Like donbrew said, everytime you clear codes,it also resets all the monitors to "not ready".
Some codes need multiple occurrences to set the CEL. The first time it occurs it is "pending". When it sets the light it is "current" . After it sets and clearsa it goes to "historic/stored".
"Pending" means it has occurred and waiting to see if it happens again. Some need to fail more than once an ignition cycle, some need to fail over a number of ignition cycles.
"Current" meant the CEL is lit.
"Historic/Stored" means that the CEL was lit and is now off, most Historic codes clear after around 100 error free ignition cycles.
Very few codes need to be manually cleared, most clear themselves when rectified.
The EVAP tests take several COLD start driving cycles to completed. Every time the codes are cleared all of the tests are set to "not ready" and must run again.
There is a section in Torque Lite labelled "I/M Readiness". It tells you when you are ready to go for smog testing. The Federal law allows ! test to be "incomplete"., that will usually be one of the EVAP tests.
"Check Gas Cap" oddly enough, means check the gas cap because it is leaking.
So on Saturday I pulled the 2010 SS from her cave and ran her around town on some errands. CEL came on, proved to be P0332 (Knock Sensor (KS) 2 Circuit Low Voltage.)
"Huh." I thought. "Maybe a mouse chewed on a wire."
On Sunday, after having given it some thought, I decide to clear the code and see how long it took to return. Never got to do that because when I turned the key the CEL was gone.
Come to think of it, she may have done the exact same thing after hibernation last year.
