Manual transmission woes
Manual transmission woes
HI All
I'm currently experiencing some issues regarding non-engagement of second and reverse gears in my '08 SS manual 5 speed w/LSD
One of the mechanics said it's very difficult to rebuild these things.
This epic began when the dealership replaced the transmission earlier this year, using what I thought was a reconditioned unit, but was in fact simply a used one. It was a bit 'notchy', which I attributed to being newer. Then as I started using is a bit more enthusiastically, I noticed it was more difficult to shift, and now I've noticed it not engaging in second and sometimes reverse.
The original transmission was just fine, except for a small crack resulting from an impact with a rock, which caused nearly $5,000.00 damage. Personally I think they ought to have left the old one in there -- it wasn't leaking or showing any other signs of damage.
So now I'm looking for a decent replacement unit, or advice regarding rebuilding this one in a timely manner.
Thoughts?

Yes. ICBC has to deal with it. I'm offering an assist, as far as I'm able. I understand Cobalt transmissions work well in the HHR, so they ought to find one for me.
Unless the mechanic is lying, I believe it was attempted.
The problem is that the replacement transmission was 'approved' by some jobber or other, but was actually due to failure.
My 'old' transmission was just fine, apart from a cosmetic flaw caused by the large rock impact. I did suggest they take a look and see if the old one was still sitting in the boneyard, but apparently it has been hauled away. Shame.

The HHR SS 5 speed is a Saab transmission. MU3 is the code for that tranny. The Saab factory designation is it's a F35 tranny. I think that the Cobalt SS used this same MU3, F35.
The LS and LT' 5 speeds use a different transmission which is a Getrag F23.
At the least, if you went with a Cobalt for a replacement you would need one from a SS.
I would like to see the parts breakdown of this transmission.
Interested in how second gear synchro is working with the reverse gear. Does reverse even have a synchro ?
Hard engagement can be linkage/cables or clutch disengagement.
Just my 2 cents.
