Miles on an oil change?

I just got done doing a 10,000 mile service. Since I bought the SS I had changed the oil at 1000mi and at 5000mi. At the 10,000 the oil life monitor was reading 21%. At what mile mile mark do you change your oil? or do you change it according to the oil life monitor?

843de 03-31-2012 09:42 AM

Uh oh! Now you gone and done it!

Here's a thread on oil change intervals, you'll find varying opinions and arguments, give it a read and draw your conclusions.

https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/maintenance-upkeep-50/oil-change-time-36658/

IMO...On a highly strung turbocharged engine like yours, I'd change the oil every 3,000 miles, but that is just my opinion because the oil life indicator is not foolproof.

acpantera 03-31-2012 10:16 AM

I don't want to start an oil thread. I am curious of what sort of oil life reading folks are having when they change their oil at what ever mileage.

SS fan 03-31-2012 10:28 AM

Three time per reset, bout 4,500 miles each, still looks ugly when it comes out.:D

The point was ANOTHER thread:smile:. Search tool is your friend:wink:. Now let's ask what brand is best, nobody ever asked that.:clappy:

acpantera 03-31-2012 11:13 AM

How about not thinking of it as thread but a survey. My interest is in how much variation in mileage verses oil life readings. I already know I use the best oil and filter known to man and my maintenance skills are supreme.

whopper 03-31-2012 11:35 AM

Really, the thread and "surveys" have been done to death here. We almost need a separate category for it. LOL

Like donbrew says, the search engine is your friend. ;-)

(now I got to go change my oil again, cause I change my oil whenever a new thread pops up on this subject. This makes about 4 oil changes in the last 6 months. Gonna go broke at this rate - oh well, I'll just cut back on the dog's feed)

acpantera 03-31-2012 11:50 AM

ok, you win, never mind, forget it,sorry I brought it up. c-ya later, happy motoring.

I think I'll start a thread in 2 days!!! You better buy extra oil!!!

Nor-Cal HHR Club 03-31-2012 12:58 PM

When the Oil Life reads 40%, we change it.

No offence meant man. It's been kind of a long running joke here at times - sometimes when the thread is brought up again, someone makes a comment about whopper having to go change the oil again. It's all in fun.

843de 03-31-2012 04:18 PM

Yeah, please don't go away mad, its just one of those deals where instead of letting it get into "argument" territory again, we get a bit irreverent instead.

Breadfan 03-31-2012 06:01 PM

Now I know why there are so many members with low post counts that haven't logged on in forever. They must have asked about the oil before they got to know ya.

goetylsd 03-31-2012 06:46 PM

Please delete this thread... :lockd::lockd::lockd::lockd::lockd::lockd: Just kidding, LOL!

SS fan 03-31-2012 07:23 PM

Gee, don't ask about tire pressure,............:D

my SS has been and will continue to be changed in between 3000 to 4000 miles. i know they say it lasts longer, but is it worth $100 or so a year to take a chance? wont hurt anything by changing it earlier.:thumb:

i dont really pay attention to the oil life monitor

oh and i have no problem answering questions for members if there could be another thread about it. its not like the forum is out of space like a over filled attic. just my opinion

SS fan 04-01-2012 09:47 AM

How many pounds of pressure do yours fluctuate from cold to hot. Mine cold 30, and hot 33, only 32, when raining, must be water cooled.

I put the miles on pretty quick, at 4,500, I'm changing every 60 days.:propeller:

When the DIC says CHANGE OIL and stays on all the time !

JAMIROBri 04-01-2012 10:24 AM

I get free oil changes for the first 2 years since it was a certified car. They will only change it when the DIC says it's time.

http://www.mdshooters.com/images/smilies/sarcasm.gif So how often do I change the oil in my tires? Do I need a left handed wrench for the left side?

SS fan 04-01-2012 08:31 PM

No just turn over your metric crescent wrench.:thumb:

Sounds like you need this.....

Seasonal Tire Air from KaleCoAuto....Only $28.90 plus shipping

Everyone knows that temperature can have a great impact in your tire pressure. This is why you absolutely should use the correct air for your tires! For example, your car should usually have the tires set to 32psi. If you are using summer air in the summer, this is fine. However! If you use this summer air in the dead of winter, your may actually only be running at about 22psi! Each can will do one average sized tire. Sold in sets of 1 each.

whopper 04-01-2012 09:00 PM

Cool stuff - is it available in a metric compatible size? Being in Can-a-duh, we are metric and are not allowed to speak that psi you mentioned. Here we typically run 220kPa in our tires.

And I read somewhere on the internet that psi-based air is not compatible with kPa air, so I don't even top up my tires when I am down in the USA. Better safe than sorry I say - if it saves but one childs life............ ;-)

843de 04-01-2012 09:03 PM

Don't forget the import duties on non-Metric air, and then there are those "Air Sniffing" dogs at the border crossings you have to worry about.
