The upstream O2 sensor was bad.
Good idea. It's worth a shot. The oxygen sensor is old anyways.

I do recall that there was a code pertaining to the oxygen sensor when this all started.

Which brand is the one everyone recommends to stay away from?

Rock Auto claims that Bosch is the OEM sensor. The alternatives are NTK, Walker, or GM genuine.

I'd use OEM.

Bosch is not OE, that's the one to avoid. You want NTK/NGK.

Bosch tells RockAuto that, so don’t blame RockAuto. They just post what their suppliers tell them.

They get away with that because they are manufactured within the OEM specs. The problem is quality control. Many of them are not good right out of the box. Some work some don't. Don't take the chance.

Yep, that's the difference between OE and OEM. OE is original equipment, and OEM is just what Greg said.

DO NOT USE BOSCH. NTK/NGK makes the ACDelco. Parts books that claim a part is OEM don't mean that is what the factory installed; it means "like Original Equipment" not "Original Equipment Manufacturer".
My experience with Bosch aligns with the poor reputation they have on the interwebs.

We put in a new NTK oxygen sensor from Rock Auto.

On a test drive, the engine no longer misfires (and no misfire codes).

However, my son said during the test drive twice there was a very short "hiccup" where the car appeared to miss for a fraction of a second and then was fine.

There is a pending code that says the oxygen sensor (Bank 1, Sensor 1) signal is low. If you erase the code, it comes back as pending. I don't have the exact code number, as my son is at work and he has the code number. I'll get it from him later.

The oxygen sensor on the SS is up near the turbo and the connector is actually attached to the top of the engine near the driver side. Ther is only a short wiring run between the sensor connector and the PCM. I want to check the wiring (and connectors) from the sensor connector to the PCM. I don't have a schematic showing the wiring from the sensor to the PCM. The HHR SS models have a 5-wire oxygen sensor vs a 4-wire oxygen sensor on the LS and LT models. This may be because the SS needs a wider-band sensor due to the turbo.

Does anyone have a schematic showing the wiring from the oxygen sensor to the PCM? This is a 2008 SS.

Thanks
Steve

It is a wire, what good is a diagram?
Let the pending code sit until it turns current. It might be pending from before the replacement.
